About The Image
Over the years I have been involved in Liviing History re-enactments ranging anywhere from Civil War soldier to Fur Trader. Although I rarely participate much anymore, the allure of this concept of experiencing history by living it has retained a strong interest for myself. During the Summer of 2007 I attended a Civil War re-enactment near my home and rediscovered the fascination with this pasttime. This image was taken during the first evening of the encampment and this re-enactor was a real sport in posing for his photo. I wanted to capture that sense of old by using the lantern as not only a prop, but as the sole source of lighting. The exposure was a long 2 seconds or so and the character had to sit still during that time, sort like the old wetplate photographers of the day.

Cameras and lenses are simply tools to place our unique vision on film. Concentrate on equipment and you'll take technically good photographs. Concentrate on seeing the light's magic colors and your images will stir the soul."…Jack Dykinga
