One of the most overwhelming things a visitor discovers at Crater Lake is the scale of nature...which is massive. Within human existance in North America, this once perfectly formed volcano blew its top much like Mount St Helens, except on a scale so huge as to defy comprehension. In time, nature healed the wounds, and reclaimed the destroyed mountain to create possibly the most beautiful lake in the world. This huge block of volcanic residue if lifted from its perch from the waters edge to the top and placed in the deepest part of the lake would still be submerged several hundred feet. The trick as a photographer is to capture this feeling on film...the time of day to do so is when the shadows are long.
